What is “Be Somebody”?
An Introduction
There are 15 million disadvantaged young people in the United States. Every 29 seconds a student drops out of school. Most students don’t think about career choices or what they want to accomplish in life until they are approaching high school graduation. Often they reach adulthood without clear goals or a plan that will help them make their dreams a reality. “Be Somebody” is a unique enrichment program that targets youth from the eighth grade to high school as well as adults, with age-appropriate lessons aimed at motivating them to begin thinking about their future.
“Be Somebody” is a strategic, comprehensive road map for young people to attain a rewarding life filled with happiness and success. The long-term goals of this program are to:
- Help students and others understand the value of planning for their future
- Help students and others explore their strengths, goals, and strategies for success
- Help students and others make the connection between education and careers
- Help reduce the dropout rate
- Provide ongoing development
- Help close the achievement gap
What's in it for you?
In today's global economy, it's all about branding. Giving back to the community that you serve is an undeniable asset. It demonstrates that you not only care about the communities that support your products and services, but also are willing to provide them with educational and training options. Eighty percent of the fastest growing jobs in the United States require education or training beyond high school. By 2011, we will have an unskilled and uneducated workforce that will be unable to compete in the global market. It is going to require individuals and organizations like you and me, through partnerships and training, to reverse the problem.
Program requirements
Anyone in the eighth grade or higher with a willingness to increase his or her education and training.
